Edith Clarke wasn't just the first female electrical engineer; she changed the way power is transmitted.
She invented the Clarke Calculator, which simplified the complex calculations needed to understand long-range power transmission. The Clarke Calculator allowed transmission lines to safely and reliably extend 200 miles from power plants, instead of just 50 miles. This helped give rise to the power grid we use today.
Clarke didn't stop there. She also had the bright idea to use data analytics to measure what was happening on those power lines. But first, she had to figure out how to capture that information and analyze it, which paved the way for the smart grid we know today.
Edith Clarke broke barriers in her career as a hall of fame inventor who literally brought power to our homes, and gave the energy industry the power to better understand power.
